For example, the smell of its mother helps it to orient itself towards the breast and stimulates the opening of its eyes. After a few months, it even directs the infant&#8217;s gaze towards faces and facilitates perception. It has therefore been shown that an early sense such as smell influences the development of a later sensory modality such as sight. Does this influence of smell go so far as to help infants better remember visual events previously associated with odours?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover\" style=\"min-height:640px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim-0 has-background-dim\"><\/span><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-block-cover__image-background wp-image-3659\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/5senses4kids.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/pexels-tetyana-kovyrina-1879288.jpg\" data-object-fit=\"cover\" \/><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#3c7a95\">The project &#8220;Parfum d&#8217;images&#8221; measures the impact of the association of odour and images on infants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">To answer this question, the &#8220;Parfum d&#8217;images&#8221; project proposes to measure the impact of an odour-image association on the ability of 4-6 month old infants to recognise images afterwards. We will bring the infants to the laboratory on two separate occasions. During their first visit, we will measure their brain activity while presenting them with various images. This measurement will be conducted in two distinct environments scented with different perfumes. This first measurement will make it possible to show the absence of a cerebral response to given images, still unknown to the infant, and the absence of a difference in cerebral activity between the two odorant contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">At the end of this first appointment, a scented book will be given to the child&#8217;s parents. It will contain some of the images presented during the experiment and will have the smell of one of the perfumes used during the experiment. We will then instruct the parents to read this book daily with their child between their first and second laboratory visits. The aim of this daily reading will be for the child to learn the images in association with the smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">During the infants&#8217; second laboratory visit, we will again present them with image sequences under the same conditions as their first visit. However, this time, we aim to identify a specific brain response in their neural activity that reflects their ability to recognize the images. In particular, we expect a stronger brain response in the context of the scent associated with the book? This is a non-invasive and painless method that involves placing sensors (electrodes) on the infant&#8217;s scalp to measure the electrical activity of their brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#3c7a95\">Description of the method used when presenting images to infants<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">We <strong>display<\/strong> sequences of images for infants on a screen. By presenting the images that the infants have learned from the book at a certain rate in the sequence, we will be able to analyse the brain&#8217;s response to that rate. This will serve as a brain marker of the infant&#8217;s ability to remember these images compared to other images presented to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" style=\"color:#3c7a95\">Associating scents with the images presented to the infants.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color\">We will test the scents beforehand with adults to balance their pleasantness and intensity.We will use two scents: one associated with the images, the other not.
