Konkel, 2018<\/a>). Very early on, the premises of organisation, already observed in utero, will intensify and be refined through sensory information. Cognitive abilities are gradually established, as the brain develops massively. The first three years are a time when offering a variety of sensory stimulation can be beneficial. By doing this, we can help children to develop their skills without over-stimulation. This is particularly interesting for senses that are not often valued in educational practice: smell, taste, or touch for example. On the other hand, it is useful to help children understand that natural objects are always multi-sensory objects whose different facets must be grasped in order to have a better mental representation. In the adult, each lobe is subdivided into <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lobe_(cerveau)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">topographically identifiable cortical regions<\/a> whose function is (relatively) known. Schematically, a distinction is made between areas that receive information from sensory sensors (such as the primary visual cortex in the occipital cortex at the back of the brain, or the primary auditory cortex in the temporal lobe) and so-called integration areas, particularly in the parietal lobe, which bring together information from several sensory channels and allow for hypothesised processing. There are also regions that carry out more elaborate tasks such as, for example, the selection of sensory information by directing attention, the pooling of integration areas, the appeal to memorised information, the control of predictions based on available information (with readjustment in the event of error). Others involve emotional feelings. Konkel, 2018<\/a>). On the one hand, this growth reflects the growth of neurons in the cortex (in the grey matter), the multiplication of synaptic contacts (which allow neurons to exchange information) and the creation of a very large number of communication networks between the different brain regions. On the other hand, the axons of the neurons are surrounded by an insulating sheath (myelin) which increases the speed of transfer of nervous information within the networks. This process of myelination is gradual and takes several years (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3184192\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Sanchez et al (2012)<\/a>. Myelination progresses gradually from the back of the brain to the frontal lobes. A study by Gregory et al (2016) of children aged 15 years on average shows that indices of cognitive ability (estimated by a large number of neuropsychological tests) are essentially correlated with the degree of gyrification of the cortical integrative areas of the cortex, those that bring together the various sensory information, rather than the sensory cortical areas that process the initial information.<br><br>\nThe variety of sensory information is important for the regularly activated networks to consolidate and enable increasingly sophisticated cognitive functions. Cerebral aptitudes are therefore the result of a massive structural development, governed by the expression of the genome (innate), consolidated by sensory experiences (acquired). Much work suggests that there are sensitive periods during which the brain is particularly receptive to sensory stimulation: brain plasticity is greater during these periods than before or after (Georgieff et al, 2015). Recent evidence points to a major role for epi-genetic factors (which alter gene expression without DNA modification) in explaining the effects of sensory experience. (Fagiolini et al, 2009).\n\n\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group grid-sensorielle container\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-color\" id=\"il-est-possible-d-observer-le-cerveau-du-tout-petit\" style=\"color:#3c7a95;font-size:24px\"><strong>It is possible to observe the brain of the very young<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-css-opacity has-background separation-petit-page-bleu\" style=\"background-color:#00b2de;color:#00b2de\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:30px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"a-inherit has-text-color\" style=\"color:#5c5c5c\">Different variants of MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can provide precise information, both structural and functional. Their use to examine the brain at the end of gestation and during early childhood has required great technical ingenuity, because at this period it does not yet have the characteristics of an adult brain. For example, the cortex is still poorly organised, the white matter is poorly myelinated, and various factors complicate the recordings (uncontrollable head movements, higher heart and breathing rates). Very recently, these problems have been overcome (e.g. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6969274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cusac<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6969274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">k<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6969274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <em>et al<\/em><\/a>. (2018)) and we are beginning to better understand how the brain is structured and how the communication pathways between the different cortical regions are set up and allow the exchange of information. Major projects are underway, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6151176\/pdf\/nihms957331.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Baby Connectome Project<\/a>, to better describe, on a large scale, the evolution of the brain from birth to the age of five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" id=\"accordion\"> \n  <div class=\"card\">\n    <div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingQuatre\">\n      <h5 class=\"mb-0 border-bottom-accordion\">\n        <button class=\"btn btn-link collapsed\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapseQuatre\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapseQuatre\">\n          Read more <span>+<\/span>\n        <\/button>\n      <\/h5>\n    <\/div>\n    <div id=\"collapseQuatre\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingQuatre\" data-parent=\"#accordion\">\n      <div class=\"card-body\">\n\t\tAnatomical MRI allows us to observe the local thickness of the cortex and its degree of gyrification. Diffusion MRI allows us to understand the organisation of the axons of cortical neurons within the white matter to determine which parts of the cortex are interconnected.<br><br>\nThese two anatomical observation techniques show that in adults the cortex can be divided into a multitude of sub-regions that are structurally connected in a complex way. These anatomical MRI and diffusion MRI techniques are beginning to be used on very young children. For example, Blesa et al (2019) obtained an image of the brain connections of children born prematurely (23-33 weeks) and fed mainly with breast milk for a few weeks.  It appears that the processes of organising the transfer of information from sensory to associative cortexes take place very early. This study also shows that if premature babies are fed less breast milk, the internal connectivity is less developed: breastfeeding is important for the brain development of premature babies. The construction of the brain, which uses 60% of the body&#8217;s total energy consumption, requires a constant supply of a number of nutrients (polyunsaturated fatty acids, iron, zinc, proteins (Georgieff et al. , 2015)).\n\n\n\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group has-background\" style=\"background-color:#00b2de\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading container has-white-color has-text-color\" id=\"imagerie-fonctionnelle-du-jeune-cerveau-lors-de-stimulations-sensorielles\">Functional imaging of the young brain during sensory stimulation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group container grid-science\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-group grid-gauche\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:15px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-css-opacity has-white-background-color has-background separation-petit-page-bleu\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"a-inherit has-white-color has-text-color\">To<strong> <\/strong>these structural data (which cortical regions can communicate) can be associated functional MRI, which makes it possible to identify active cortical regions by measuring a signal related to local oxygen consumption. Applied to the brains of newborns, this technique makes it possible to better understand, for example, which regions are activated in response to sensory stimuli.  For example, a study by <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29106509\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Adam-Darque <em>et al<\/em><\/a> (2018) shows that, a few days after birth, odorant stimulation triggers the activation of sensory and integrative brain regions similar to those observed in an adult (piriform cortex, orbitofrontal cortex and insula). In contrast to the visual system, the olfactory system is functional very early in gestation and plays an important role in the mother-infant relationship at birth. It was also shown by functional MRI that the auditory cortex of preterm and day-old infants are functionally connected to cortical regions known to be involved in tempo and familiarity processing <a href=\"https:\/\/reader.elsevier.com\/reader\/sd\/pii\/S105381191830288X?token=A445523A973AE62559F31B968922507C3A2406772E1A1971EDE4EDFA33FB12E98A674396A32794C098BC2E538AE24065\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(Lordier <em>et al<\/em><\/a>. (2013<\/a>)). This technique makes it possible to distinguish, in adults, a number of active networks operating in parallel but independently. These networks can also be observed by the magnetoencephalography technique which records the electrical activity of the brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"a-inherit has-text-color\" style=\"color:#5c5c5c\">In recent years, resting-state functional MRI has been widely used to study the brain of young children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4537436\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(Gao <em>et al.<\/em><\/a>(2015), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6289773\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Zhang <em>et al.<\/em><\/a>(2019)). For example, it shows that in the womb, at 32 weeks of gestation,  there is activity in both sensory and associative cortices <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3618956\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(Thomason <em>et al<\/em><\/a>. (2013). The general organisation of sensory information processing is thus in place very early <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5963507\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(van den Heuvel <em>et al<\/em><\/a>. (2018)).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left a-inherit has-text-color\" style=\"color:#5c5c5c\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>    <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group grid-sensorielle container\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<div style=\"height:50px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"\" id=\"accordion\"> \n  <div class=\"card\">\n    <div class=\"card-header\" id=\"headingCinq\">\n      <h5 class=\"mb-0 border-bottom-accordion\">\n        <button class=\"btn btn-link collapsed taille-pour-mobile\" data-toggle=\"collapse\" data-target=\"#collapseCinq\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"collapseCinq\">\n          But what is known about the development <br class=\"displaynonepc\"> of the brain of the very young child?<br>There are many scientific studies on this.<br class=\"displaynonepc\"> We provide an overview of these studies <span>+<\/span><br> \n      <\/button>\n      <\/h5>\n    <\/div>\n    <div id=\"collapseCinq\" class=\"collapse\" aria-labelledby=\"headingCinq\" data-parent=\"#accordion\">\n      <div class=\"card-body\">\n\t\tContrary to what one might think, the newborn brain is not an amorphous mass. It is already structured and pre-organised into major networks and information processing principles. The cerebral territories that collect the various sensory information are in place and integrative regions are already present in an outline state. These integrative regions, of different levels, collect information from different sensory channels. They play an important role in the global, integrated perception of things, beings and situations and the emergence of concepts.<br><br>\n\nSome sensory pathways have already been solicited in utero: smell, gustation, hearing, body sensations for example<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6537870\/\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">(Vasung et al. (2019<\/a>)). Others will only develop after birth, due to the immaturity of the receiving organ (e.g. the visual system). But within a few months, these facilities are effective enough for the baby to start developing the skills to understand and interact with the world around it. However, it takes a long process of learning for all these levels to operate effectively and enable the elaborate cognitive functions of the adult.<br><br>\n\nThe brain is a dynamic system that is constantly reconfiguring itself and changing as we learn.  According to the theory of <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plasticit%C3%A9_neuronale\" target=\"blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brain plasticity<\/a>, new networks are constantly being created and their connections are strengthened if they are actively used. If they are not used, they regress. This relationship between activity and consolidation of the underlying neural networks is the basis of all learning. Experience and learning change both the structure of the brain and its functional organisation. The <em>superior temporal sulcus<\/em> (which plays an important role in the recognition of faces, voices, language and attribution of mental states to others in adults) is already functionally connected to visual associative areas, primary auditory cortex and somato-sensory (body representation) associative regions. The <em>intraparietal sulcus<\/em> (involved in visual attention and visuo-motor coordination to manipulate objects) is already connected with visual and somato-sensory associative areas. (2013) that there are differences in resting brain activity in adults, particularly in the frontal lobe and associative cortices. This is also found in one-month, one-year and two-year old children <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4138339\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">(Gao <em>et al<\/em><\/a>. (2014)). The origin of these inter-individual differences is not yet clear. According to Mueller <em>et al.<\/em> (2013), they could be due to the effect of differences in sensory experiences, but Gao <em>et al<\/em>.
